cleaning of oil paintings

‘The oil painting on the wall speaks a thousand silent words’.
This is a saying that goes down well with art connoisseurs, the world over. No wonder they are willing to spend any amount on a masterpiece of their liking. Art is considered an appreciating asset. And this has been proven through the ages.

However, while antique art has been passed down hundreds of years, the fact is that care has to be taken in maintaining them well. While the oil paint does not chip of, yet the problem is that of dust accumulation. And over a period of time a stubborn layer of dust accumulates, forming an almost permanent part of the canvas.

Cleaning of oil paintings is not all that difficult, nor is it time consuming. One simply needs to wipe it on daily basis with a dry and soft duster. And once in a fortnight one can use a damp cloth to wipe it. This should not be done too often, as then the pint may begin to fade or then bleed.

In fact, the care of oil paintings may seem like a daunting task, but is not so. The fact that paintings have been passed down through centuries, and yet there is no evident wear and tear of the canvas works. Look at the oil paintings in caves for instance. Not much of care has really gone into maintaining them.

While art galleries have paintings ready to sell, there are artists who specialize in custom oil paintings. These are made according to the request of one buying a painting. These are usually the family portraits or personal portraits. Interior designers also prefer to get their clients oil paintings that are customized, in keeping with the theme of the interiors.
